Earthquake Near Portugal’s Azores: A strong earthquake of 6.0 magnitude hit on Wednesday by hundreds of miles from Portugal’s Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, USA geologists and Portuguese.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake 445 kilometers (277 miles) south of the islands, at a depth of 10 km at 4:41 pm (1841 GMT) but was felt in the region.

The remote islands are earthquake-prone Portuguese archipelago located about 1,500 km from Lisbon and is home to some 240,000 Azoreans.

“The event was felt in the region,” said the Institute of volcanic and seismic activity in the Azores, Civis.
