Ellen DeGeneres will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and the judge Kara DioGuardi fourth on “American Idol” next winter, Fox announced on Wednesday night.
The announcement comes after Paula Abdul said last month he was leaving the program before his ninth season, scheduled to start in January 2010.

Ms. DeGeneres, a popular television presenter during the day, will join the panel of celebrity judges “after the auditions, which are currently taking place in cities across the country.

“I am delighted to be the new judge on American Idol,” Ms. DeGeneres said in a statement. “I’ve seen from the beginning, and I’ve always been a big fan. So I get this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money you save by not having to text my vote.”
